    Full Description

The Mountain Equipment Citadel Jacket is Mountain Equipment's Iconic Synthetic insulated belay jacket for the absolute worst conditions. Twice as warm as the Fitzroy Jacket, its PrimaLoft Gold insulation and GORE-TEX INFINIUM outer will keep you warm and dry no matter what the weather is doing or how long you're on the belay.

The GORE-TEX INFINIUM outer is totally windproof and highly water resistant, making it the perfect jacket to deal with spindrift and windy conditions. The PrimaLoft Gold ultra-fine microfibre insulation is combined with Aerogel technology to increase warmth and decrease pack size for an exceptionally lightweight and warm jacket, even if it gets wet. The ultra-fine fibres form tiny air pockets that mimic the compressibility of goose down, trap body heat and are breathable, allowing moisture vapour to be transported through and away from the skin.

The Super Alpine hood is helmet compatible and features a wired brim, being fully adjustable so it will seal out even the most howling gale. With the Shoulder Shield construction there are no seams over the shoulder and arm areas, this is beneficial as it minimises heat loss and water entry. There is no shortage of storage options with four front pockets; to both keep essential items close to hand and also to keep your hands warm. Inside the jacket there are two internal mesh pockets, that is perfect for pre warming your gloves in and a water bottle holder. The Citadel also features ME's Mountain Fit, this allows your layering system to move with you and gives you a greater freedom of movement.

This jacket is advertised as the warmest belay jacket ME make - fully synthetic I bought this for the synthetic fill's water resistant coating on the fibres. So it should still be warm when wet. Far from god forsaken Scottish gullies, I've worn it dog walking and rain beads immediately on the surface, it is warm as advertised and the hood clearly accommodates a helmet. The packsize is comprable to a small sleeping bag. The price tag is steep, but this certainly feels like it will do the job when the time comes.

Over the last ten years Ive used an old ME Citadel (stolen:-( ) an ME Fitroy (too cold) a Rab Photon (a bit of a flimsy outer) and a Berghaus 7000 Extrem (ok but big when packed) and now Im back with another Citadel which is by far the best designed , warmest and toughest of them all. , Waterproof and windproof along with the EXL stitching in the back which keeps it warmer and better fitting and a really brilliant hood design . Packs pretty small considering the amount of warmth it provides. When the weather gets serious this is THE jacket you want to be able to pull out of your pack. Great service from Facewest on delivery and price

Recently purchased from Facewest. Excellent service. I use this jacket for wildlife surveys on hilltops in the winter, where I usually stand around for many hours. It easily the best jacket I've used for keeping me warm in cool, wet and windy conditions. I particularly like the pockets, which are fleece backed and don't vent into the body. The hood is excellent, highly adjustable, protective and close fitting. The length is good, covering most of my rear. The materials seem ideal. The outer should be highly water resistant. The sleeve ends are faff free and close fitting but allow gloves to go under them. The extra insulation on the shoulders is very welcome as this is where it usually get compressed under the weight of the jacket. Overall, a very well thought out jacket. Obviously ideal as a belay jacket too, although it's weight may be off putting.

My experience of Mountain Equipment clothing is that it does what they claim for it. The quality of manufacture and performance is up there with the best. They do not hold back when describing their Citadel Jacket as their "Iconic belay jacket for the absolute worst conditions". It is designed as an overlayer so the size is a comfortable fit over a shell jacket and based on my XL size clothing it definitely works. I prefer synthetic insulation materials as when snow turns to driving rain I expect that even water "resistant" Windstopper fabric can be overwhelmed and so anticipate that the insulation layer will get wet. It has to be appreciated that the Citadel Jacket is not designed to be worn underneath a shell layer where its bulk would be an issue and the insulation would probably cause you to overheat if moving about. I am expecting this jacket to do everything that is claimed for it. As yet I have not been able to test it in full on Winter conditions as the summertime facewest incredible sale price made this a jacket a purchase not to be missed.

Excellent jacket; sizing and warmth spot on. The only minor issue is that the main zip can be a bit fiddly; something I have experienced before with ME jackets.

Excellent bomb proof jacket. 4th one I've had. First one from years ago fell apart eventually because the seams seamed to be welded or similar with not enough material to repair them Since then, wife has 2. An oversized for dog walking in cold wet weather. It's like being indoors looking out at the weather. Another for best. Don't worry about the weather when using it up the mountains.
